Melting Pot Cooks: Contact Judith Robertson The Melting Pot Mission is an outreach program under the auspices of Good Samaritan here in Johnson City. Many churches participate in this work, with each church taking one (and sometimes two) days a month in which they provide a hot, home-cooked meal for our downtown neighbors. Cherokee United Methodist Church is proud of its intergenerational, volunteer "Melting Pot Cooks" who give their time and talents to this work. On the second Sunday of the month, a group of six people spends the afternoon preparing a meal consisting of good, solid comfort foods like chicken pot pie or meatloaf, with vegetable side dishes, and a dessert of banana pudding. On the following Monday, a group of eight to eleven Cherokee Church members heat up the food, take it to Munsey Memorial UMC downtown, and spend time serving the people who come to participate. About 200 plates are served on any given Monday, with carry-outs taken to area shut-ins. Cherokee's Melting Pot Cooks added five new helpers in the past month. Food is served at the Melting Pot Monday through Friday, with breakfast items provided by local businesses and hot lunches provided by local churches, like Cherokee. This Cherokee Ministry Program is funded by the Shepherd's Storehouse, which donates $160 per month to purchase this food. Careful shopping allows us to offer excellent quality meals for a cost of around eighty cents per plate. Talk about good stewardship! Let's applaud our Melting Pot Cooks -- they really are doing the Lord's work in our world.
